Jackknife Recovery in Gallup, NM & on I-40
Recovery for jackknifed tractor-trailers on I-40 and nearby highways, day or night, including snow and ice in the winter months.
When a tractor-trailer jackknifes, the tractor and trailer fold against each other and often end up blocking lanes, sliding into the median or hanging off the shoulder. On I-40 through Gallup and Continental Divide that happens most in winter, when snow, ice and wind make the high desert roads slick. A&A Towing has been recovering trucks on this stretch of interstate since 1997, and our dispatch answers 24/7.
What happens on a jackknife call
Call (505) 862-7114 with your direction of travel, nearest mile marker, the tractor and trailer type, whether you are loaded, and whether the unit is still on the pavement or off in the median or a ditch. If the trailer is damaged or the load has moved, tell us. It changes the plan.
Our crew sets up safely, then works out the order of the recovery: straightening the tractor and trailer, winching them back onto solid ground if they have left the roadway, and checking the connection and the load before anything moves under its own power. If the rig cannot continue, we tow the tractor to a shop and can drop the trailer at our secure yard near Continental Divide so a replacement tractor can pick it up. If the freight moved, see Load Shift Correction.

What to do while you wait
- Call 911 if lanes are blocked or anyone is hurt.
- Turn on your hazards. Set out triangles only if you can do it without walking in traffic.
- In bad weather, staying buckled in the cab can be safer than standing outside. If the engine is running, keep the exhaust clear of snow.
- Do not try to power out of a jackknife. It can tear up the trailer, the tractor or the shoulder.
- Call your dispatcher and have your load information ready.
