Load Shift Correction in Gallup, NM & on I-40

Re-securing and reworking shifted loads, from loose straps to freight that has moved inside the trailer, so trucks can get back on the road safely.

A shifted load is a safety problem before it turns into an accident. Freight that has slid against the trailer wall, a load leaning on a flatbed, or broken or loose straps and chains can make a truck unstable and unsafe to drive. A&A Towing helps drivers and fleets in Gallup, Continental Divide, Grants and along I-40 get loads re-secured or reworked so the truck can get back on the road safely, or moved somewhere safe if it cannot.

How load shift correction works

Call (505) 862-7114 and tell dispatch where you are, what you are hauling, how it is secured (straps, chains, load bars or blocking), whether it is a flatbed or an enclosed trailer, and what you can see has moved. Photos help, so send them to your dispatcher if you can.

Depending on how far the load has moved, the fix can be as simple as re-strapping and re-tensioning or as involved as reworking the freight so the weight sits where it should. If the load cannot be safely reworked at the roadside, or the trailer is damaged, we can recover the trailer, tow the unit and hold it in our secure yard while the shipper, carrier or insurer decides the next step. If a shifted load has already caused a rollover or jackknife, see Rollover Recovery or Jackknife Recovery.

What to do while you wait

  • Get the truck as far off the road as you safely can, or to the nearest exit or pull-off. Do not keep driving on a load you know has shifted.
  • Do not open trailer doors on a load that may be leaning on them. Freight can fall out.
  • Do not climb on a flatbed load or work on straps alone on a busy shoulder.
  • Let your dispatcher and broker know. They may need to update the shipper and the delivery time.
  • Keep your bill of lading and load details handy.

Load Shift Correction FAQ

What causes a load to shift?

Hard braking, sharp curves, strong wind, rough pavement, or straps and chains that loosen over the miles. Even a well-secured load can move after a sudden stop.

Is it safe to keep driving with a shifted load?

Usually not. A shifted load can change how the truck handles and brakes and can make it unstable. Pull over somewhere safe and call (505) 862-7114.

Can you fix the load at the roadside?

Often, yes. Many load shifts can be corrected by re-strapping and re-securing on site. When the work cannot be done safely at the roadside, we can move the truck and trailer to our secure yard.

What if the load shift caused a rollover or jackknife?

Call us right away. We handle rollover and jackknife recovery 24/7, including recovering the cargo.

Do you work with brokers, shippers and insurers?

Yes. We coordinate with dispatchers, logistics networks and insurance providers and accept all major fleet and motorist pay options.
